  1. Basically yes, as they are both sonars. Fish finders are generally more sensitive.

  2. yes the depth finder is a fish finder (they’re the same thing it’s just how people say it you say tomato i say tomoto that sort of deal) and when you see a fish on a fish finder they will show up as an arched shape.

  3. Samething!

  4. I don’t necessarily agree with everyone on this.
They function exactly the same way, but you can buy a depth finder, and you can buy a fish finder and both have a different purpose.

A depth finder is much less sophisticated and will only “ping” the bottom. It will ignore small differences in the column.
A fish finder will ping the bottom, but also scans for small early return objects in the water column above the “bottom” line. This means that part of the sonic wave returned before the rest of the “ping”. That means theres something higher up in the water there. It then grabs that info and will display it as a “fish” or mass on a screen, readable to the user.

Depth finders don’t necessarily have a “screen” many can just be had that simply display a digital number in feet. This is also a useful tool, and more practical to captains who don’t really need to see small returns and want to keep their props out of the mud, or are looking for ledges or a specific depth to find fish or structure.

Almost all fish finders do show depth, and returns in the column on a screen leading to the general thought that they are the same thing.
    They aren’t.
And do yourself a favor, if you want a fish finder, don’t just grab the 60 dollar version at walmart, they aren’t good for much more than a simple depth finder, which you could have had better quality for 50 bucks.
Reasonable fish finders start at about 250 and go up to the thousands, you can even get 3d scanners now to get a 3d picture of the bottom and whats in it!

  5. you can get a combo, with today’s technology you can get a depth finder, fish finder, and gps all in one. it costs about 500 to 5000 dollars depending on how good you want it.
